The Academic Pentathlon is an exciting five-event competition for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The program encourages and rewards academic excellence among students of all ability levels. Students in public and private schools compete as individuals and team members in a series of five academic tests, including: math, literature, social science, science, and essay. Participants research and study the content outlined in the Academic Pentathlon Study Guide published annually. Pentathlon curriculum is aligned with California state content standards. The program culminates with an awards ceremony. The top scoring teams and individual students are awarded medals and plaques for highest scores.

The Orange County Spelling Bee is sponsored by The Orange County Register and coordinated by the Orange County Department of Education. Winners from school or district spelling bees participate in the county’s “preliminary written round.” The best spellers from the written round move on to the “spell-off,” where students spell words orally to determine the top speller in the county. The winner participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals in Washington D.C.


The Orange County Academic Decathlon (OCAD) invites public and private high school students to compete as individuals and team members in a series of ten academic tests and demonstrations. Participants demonstrate their academic strength by completing seven written tests, writing an essay, delivering a prepared and an impromptu speech, and participating in an interview. The exciting Super Quiz oral relay is a team event held before a live audience. Each team consist of three “A” (honor), three “B” (scholastic), and three “C or below” (varsity) students. Awards are presented to the top teams as well as the top individual students in each event. The highest scoring team represents Orange County at the California Academic Decathlon competition.
The Teachers of the Year program provides recognition for outstanding teachers in Orange County. Each school district may nominate one to three teachers (depending on district size). Community colleges and private schools may each nominate one teacher. Each candidate is honored at an annual recognition ceremony hosted by the program sponsors. The K-12 finalists are invited to represent the county in the California Teachers of the Year program.
